Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) and Sound Navigation and Ranging (SONAR) are both distant sensing systems with substantial military, scientific, and commercial uses, despite the fact that they rely on two fundamentally distinct types of wave transmission. Active SONAR transmits acoustic (sound) waves, whereas RADAR transmits electromagnetic waves. In both systems, these waves return echoes from specific features or targets, allowing key qualities and attributes of the target to be determined i.e., shape, size, speed, distance, etc.

RADAR signals are usually employed for ground or atmospheric studies since electromagnetic waves are severely attenuated (diminished) in water. SONAR signals are useful for navigation and measuring under water since they easily penetrate water.

RADAR waves move at the speed of light through the atmosphere (in air). The speed of sound is substantially slower for SONAR waves (compression waves) as they travel over water. Both RADAR and SONAR systems can correctly determine the distance to their targets by measuring the time it takes for signals to travel to the target and return echoes. Both RADAR and SONAR can operate successfully under a wide range of adverse conditions to extend human sensing capabilities within their respective areas.
